Salon Events

What is a TEDx Salon?

Salon events are smaller events that keeps a TEDx community engaged between mainstage events. It’s a unique kind of gathering that TEDx organizers hold which allows the conversation to continue, in person.

At TEDxUCincinnati, our salon events allow us to engage the University community in a more informal way, including student speakers, discussions, and, of course, often pizza.

See below for salon details, including both past and upcoming events. Anyone interested is welcome and encouraged to attend!

Everyone around us has a different perspective on the world, which is especially evident this election season. This salon will emphasize the importance of recognizing various perspectives—understanding that our upbringing and surrounding community influences our view on the world. We hope to encourage students to be civically engaged and exercise their right to vote this election!

“We sometimes view ourselves as singular beings in a vast world of different people with different ideas and views. There are those similar to us and those that differ in many ways but not one the same. The theme Mosaic embodies combining these irregularities to create a bigger and better work of art.”

Mosaic was a Salon hosted and design to gear up only weeks before the second ever TEDxUCincinnati mainstage event. Three current UC students gave talks: Kyle Ivey, a musical theater major, who spoke about “seeing the bigger picture;” Juliana Madzia, a neurobiology and women’s studies student, whose talk was titled “What Neurobiology Tells Us about Racism;” and Kiran Venkat, a neuroscience and finance major, who addressed how to bridge the gap between medicine and business. All three speakers were in their third year of undergrad at the university.

“The first ever TEDxUCincinnatiSalon, Avenues encourages discussions around the ways we live our lives and the reasons behind it. Featuring student speakers and recorded talks, join us for an evening of pizza and ideas worth spreading.”

Avenues, TEDxUCincinnati’s first ever Salon, hosted three speakers, all current UC students: Meghan Pope, Mohamed Elzarka, and Caitlin Taylor. They discussed advice from an extensive college career, the importance of accessible healthcare, and how to be a change agent for students’ passions, respectively.
